Resident Assistant (RA)

job summary

The Assisted Living Resident Assistant provides personalized care and assistance to residents within an assisted living facility. This role involves supporting residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), ensuring their safety and comfort, and maintaining a positive, supportive environment. Resident Assistants also assist with medication reminders, mobility support, and personal hygiene while fostering a respectful and caring atmosphere.

Working Conditions

Key Responsibilities

  • Help residents with ADLs such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and eating.
  • Ensure residents take their prescribed medications on time and as directed.
  • Observe and report resident physical, emotional, and mental changes to the nursing team or supervisor.
  • Help residents move within the facility, including walking, transfers, and using mobility aids (e.g., wheelchairs and walkers).
  • Ensure residents’ living areas are clean, organized, and safe. Help with fall prevention and emergency response as needed.
  • Engage residents in conversation, activities, and outings to enhance their social well-being.
  • Help residents with mealtime preparation, eating, and clean-up.
  • Document resident care, observations, and interactions accurately in accordance with facility policies.
  • Regularly update supervisors, nursing staff, and family members about residents’ needs and concerns.
  • Adhere to individualized care plans for each resident and assist with implementing health and wellness strategies.
  • Assist with emergencies, including fire drills, evacuations, and medical emergencies.
  • Help with light housekeeping tasks such as changing linens, organizing personal items, and maintaining a clean-living environment.

Qualifications and Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent; certification as a Nursing Assistant (CNA) or other relevant training is preferred.
    • Previous experience in healthcare or senior care settings is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with residents, families, and team members.
  • Compassionate, patient, and attentive to residents’ needs.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical ability to assist with lifting, transferring, and supporting residents.

  • Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Depending on state requirements, CNA certification may be required.
